Hello! My name is Sylvie Mortimer, and I am a high school junior graduating in the class of 2026. I attend Rapid City Stevens High School in the Black Hills of South Dakota. My main events in Track and Field are the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, and the 4x400m relay. I began as a cross-country and long-distance runner but quickly fell in love with hurdles my freshman year. I ran my best races this past season as a sophomore, with a record of 15.40 in the 100 hurdles and 46.97 in the 300 hurdles. I placed seventh at the state meet in the 100s and improved to fifth on the podium in the 300s. My track goals this year are to break 15 in 100 hurdles and 46 in 300 hurdles and run in multiple indoor meets. Outside of athletics, I want to continue to grow and succeed in the classroom and engage weekly in my school and community extracurriculars. Balancing sports, activities, and time with family and friends is equally important. 

I’ve tried many things over the years, including gymnastics, violin, tennis, Destination Imagination, soccer, and track. My current hobbies are pickleball, hiking, and traveling, and I still play club and high school tennis. At the state tournament this fall, I placed first in varsity flight two singles and fourth in flight one doubles. The best part was winning the overall team championship! I play local and national USTA tournaments in the off-season, and I find that it helps me stay physically and mentally strong for my favorite activity of all: track! I enjoy my school and community involvement as well. I serve as a representative for Stevens on the Student Voice Forum and the Student-Athlete Leadership Team and am a member of the Rapid City Youth City Council. I am also a new member of my high school’s chapter of the National Honor Society. I believe these athletic and educational experiences are helping me develop strong leadership, communication, and time management skills for college. I’m undecided about a future major, but I will continue to take AP credits this year and my senior year. My current GPA is 3.9. 

I am so excited to run this upcoming season, and I would love to continue my track and field career by competing at the collegiate level! I look forward to growing as a student, athlete, teammate, and person these next few years, and I’m confident I can positively contribute to any time I hurdle for.
